What We’ll Do

In the stillness of winter, the natural world slows down but it does not sleep. Myriad life quietly goes about its business through the cold. Take, for example, the many lichens camouflaging insects, providing food for wildlife, fixing nitrogen to the soil and producing an astounding number of unique chemicals in nature. You may not realize it, but lichen can be found in our everyday lives– from bright magenta fabric dyes to monastic beers and even natural deodorant. These tiny organisms, perhaps better understood as tiny ecosystems, are wonders hiding in plain sight!

In this 90-minute online workshop, we will delve into the fascinating history, biology, and incredible uses for lichens, mushrooms, and other fungi in the winter. Some can be found in your backyard, while others are only discovered in the ancient fanny packs of 5,300-year-old tattooed mummies.

Yes, you read that correctly. There’s more to winter fungus that meets the eye and Felicity Roberts is here to tell us all about it!
